1899 Penny with recut 9

I found this one recently in a job lot. If you look at the first 9, towards the tail you can see what looks to be a recutting of the digit. This usually occurs due to damage to the die and is commonly known as a doubling. ~The doubling can also be seen inside the 9 at the top.

A response to a Facebook post suggested that this is perhaps die deterioration, this may be so, my mind is open on this. Another contributor has also stated that he has also seen this previously, although dismissed by the greater good of the Penny world as insignificant.

I don’t really mind what it is as it is something different and it is only by careful scrutiny of the coins in this way can we build a full picture of what was happening at the mint in the years gone by.
