1920/21 Penny Obverse variant

The books make reference to two obverse varieties plus a minor die issue on 1921 minted coins that are classed as a variety. The clues to these varieties lie with the front of King George V’s neck and the orientation of the colon dots after IMP.

Obverse 2

Obverse 2 has a gentle curve to the neck of the King and the colon dots line up with a gap in the teeth at the rim.

Obverse 3

The neck of Obverse 3 is sharper and the colon dots after IMP line up with a tooth at the rim.

The minor variation relates to the 1921 minted coins where the lower colon dot after the OMN, on this variety it is missing. None of my coins show this issue but on looking through some 1921 coins I ahve come across some coins that show obvious issues during minting.

Missing top dots
Missing bottom dots but this image does show how the colon dots line up with a tooth on Obverse 3
