This particular book was purchased to keep track of what coins I have in the main, pre-decimal, coin collection. The book contains a guide to the value of a particular coin which comes in very useful when visiting the local auction.

Now in its 44th edition, this book tags its self as a “Comprehensive price-guide to British pre-decimal coins 1760 -1970”. As comprehensive as it is, it should be kept in mind that not all variations of coins are included in this publication. This is not a criticism as to include every major and minor variation of a particular coin would require a library rather than the not far off pocket size book that this is. There are many other publications that deal with the variations of coins which are best suited if you are wanting to go down this route.

The book gives a brief description of the different denominations as well as size and weight information of the coin before moving on to giving details of the year, reference numbers (either Peck (English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum 1558 – 1958) or Freeman (The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain), Mintage , Notes and the all important value for the different grades.

When it comes to value it should be remembered that this is just a guide and not a definitive price. The value of a coin (over and above any bullion value in the case of Silver and Gold coins) is only what people are prepared to pay.

The book contains some good notes as well as various illustrations to help when identifying particular coins and variations

Overall this is a good book to have in the home library as it contains an amount of very useful information and is small enough to carry in a large pocket to act as reference material when out and about if looking for coins.
